Citi and GE Lightbulb Swap Initiative
On April 19, 2008, in partnership with JUCCCE, GE and Citibank helped initiate our Energy Efficient Lighting program. Dozens of volunteers joined us to replace incandescent light bulbs with our first batch of energy-efficient, compact fluorescent light bulbs. The bulbs were generously provided by GE.
Incandescent light bulbs have been the sole source of light for many people at night for the past 100 years. Yet, because 90% of the energy they use is wasted as heat, they are considered very energy inefficient. In a time of rising energy costs and consumption, we want to facilitate the move away from incandescent light bulb usage across China to more energy-efficient sources of lighting.
With the support of corporate, celebrity, and university volunteers, JUCCCE and our lighting partners GE and Philips Lighting aim to donate 130,000 compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) to 8 cities in China to replace existing incandescent light bulbs.
