2010 JUCCCE China Energy Forum
Two days ago, JUCCCE and the National Academy for Mayors of China (NAMC) co-organized the 2010 JUCCCE China Energy Forum, which took place at the Shangri-La Hotel in Beijing. The forum brought together many of China’s mayors and state-owned enterprise executives in a discussion about efforts to make China’s cities greener. This discussion is especially pertinent considering that China’s energy demands and carbon footprint are only increasing day after day.
Over the past quarter century, China’s demand for energy has tripled, with industrial energy demand accounting for about 70% of energy demand in China. Mayors have a key role in deciding whether China’s cities will go green or not, since they have strong control over land use and local policy.
Our chairperson Peggy Liu said, "this is a tremendous opportunity to understand where China's cities and industries are in their quest to go green… understanding the needs of China's mayors and State Owned Enterprises is essential to understanding today's China.” Wang Zhongping of the NAMC added, “mayors are thirsty for solutions, and JUCCCE is a window to international expertise and technologies."
Additionally, highlights from the Forum included the awarding of the Hillary Institute of International Leadership's 2010 Laureate to JUCCCE Chairperson Peggy Liu, the presentation of McKinsey & Company's new China Water Cost Curve, and a keynote address by IPCC Chair and Nobel Laureate Dr. Rajendra Pachauri.
